AFSCME International Executive Board Endorses

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for President!

After receiving boxing gloves from International President Gerald McEntee, Senator Clinton said,

"When it comes to fighting for America's working families, I'll go 10 rounds with anybody!"

The following is a special message from Executive Director David R. Fillman who served on

AFSCME International's Presidential Search Committee.

October 31:  Mike Fox and I voted today to endorse Senator Hillary Clinton for President of the United States.  When we started this process in early 2007, I thought the 3 top Democratic contenders would keep bouncing back and forth in the polls.  I thought that our members, as well as the rest of the nation, would fluctuate opinions based on new information, various debates, other union endorsements, etc.  However, it soon became clear that one candidate was ahead of the pack and consistent in the polls.  That one candidate is Senator Hillary Clinton.  AFSCME polled members in Pennsylvania and she is the leader.  AFSCME International polled members nationwide and she is the leader.  She also leads in national polls in almost every state.  She has raised more money than any candidate in the running today and her campaign has the necessary momentum to carry her to the presidency in 2008. AFSCME wanted to be on board as soon as possible in endorsing the next President of the United States.  The members have spoken and the AFSCME Executive Board has agreed; the one candidate for working families in America is Senator Hillary Clinton.

Mike Fox, AFSCME District Council 89 Director and AFSCME International Executive Board member, had this to say about today's decision. "Over a year ago we as an International Executive Board made a committment to our members that they would play a central role in the endorsement decision.  Between then and now we talked to over 43,000 of our members nationwide and the overwhelming decision of those members was in favor of Senator Hillary Clinton.  That fact, combined with a thorough review of her position on issues important to AFSCME, resulted in an overwhelming vote to give the valuable endorsement of AFSCME to Senator Hillary Clinton."
