Statewide Steering Committee Meeting

August 31, 2011

Council 13's Statewide Steering Committee took part in an evaluation and interview process with labor-friendly judicial candidates in a meeting held at Council 13 headquarters in Harrisburg.   C13 Exec. Dir. David R. Fillman told the committee, "Any worker who thinks these elections aren't important needs to remember Bush vs. Gore, Payless Paydays, and the Wisconsin recalls.  Now, more than ever, working families need fair and balanced representation in our courtrooms."

Superior Court Candidate, Judge David N. Wecht, (3rd from left) with Bill Dando, C13 Legislative Director (L); David R. Fillman, C13 Executive Director; and Todd Singer, C13 President.  Wecht received a unanimous endorsement from the committee.  Judge Wecht called the recent attacks on public workers "a large nationwide phenomenon."   He told the committee that those who represent corporate interests are forgetting that without unions, there is no middle class.

Commonwealth Court Candidate, Kathryn Boockvar, (3rd from left) was also unanimously endorsed by the committee.  A union member with U.A.W., Boockvar said, "Issues close to my heart are heard in this court.  This year people are listening and we really have an incredible opportunity to make a difference."

Former Superior Court Judge Bob Graci (2nd from right)

spoke on behalf of Justice J. Michael Eakin (Supreme Court Retention).  "Mike gives everybody a level playing field," said Graci.  "And he's a friend of labor."  Justice Eaken sided with the PA Supreme Court majority in the ruling which overturned the 2008 Commonwealth Court decision to permit "payless paydays" for state employees.
