AFSCME Free College Benefit: For spouses, too!

You may know that AFSCME members are eligible for the Free College Benefit through Eastern Gateway Community College (EGCC), but did you know that it is available for the family of AFSCME members, including children, step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, financial dependents, siblings, parents, domestic partners and spouses?

Well, it’s true. Just ask Jennifer Reitz Bucher, who is the wife of AFSCME Local 166 (Selinsgrove Center) member Steven Bucher.

Jennifer Reitz Bucher, beside her husband Steven (Local 166, Selinsgrove Center), displays her Associate Degree that she earned through the AFSCME Free College Benefit!

Jennifer graduated from EGCC’s Patient Home Navigator Program summa cum laude as part of the Free College Benefit, and she is now enrolled in the Business Management degree program with Healthcare Focus.

“As a nurse, this program has given me additional education to perform my job duties, and I am ever so grateful for the opportunity,” said Jennifer, who is an alumna of Geisinger Medical Center School of Nursing and works in the Geisinger Health System.

“Community college classes are nothing to look down on. They are challenging and the education is so very worth it. My supervisors and the main physician I work with are thrilled that I have the PHN certificate.”

Council 13 congratulates Jennifer and wishes her the best as she continues her educational journey.
