Senate Bill 166 defeated in PA House

Senate Bill 166, a “Paycheck Protection” bill, was defeated in a Tuesday evening vote by 102-90 in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.

More accurately described as Paycheck Deception, this type of policy is a direct assault on unions and their members’ ability to have a voice in political matters that directly affect them. SB 166 would have prohibited voluntary, automatically deducted political contributions by union members in Pennsylvania.

The cost to taxpayers to make these deductions is next to nothing, and uses the same automatic deduction system that is used to take taxes, Medicare, charitable contributions and insurance payments, out of workers’ paychecks.

“Make no mistake, this is a major victory for working families, and it wouldn’t have happened if not for members from multiples unions making their voices heard through calls, emails and office visits,” Council 13 Executive Director David Fillman said.

“We are thankful for those diligent activists, as well as the legislators on both sides of the aisle who stood with us.”

House Republican members submitted a motion to reconsider the Senate Bill 166 vote, which could come up at a later date, and Council 13’s Legislative Department will continue to monitor the situation closely.
