Support AFSCME members affected by Hurricane Irma
Hurricane Irma has wreaked havoc on the people of Florida and surrounding areas. AFSCME members around the country opened their hearts and their wallets to donate more than $50,000 to the victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, and we now must do the same for our sisters and brothers in Florida, Georgia and Puerto Rico.
Just like with Harvey, AFSCME members are not only personally affected by the hurricane’s destruction, but they are also the ones on the front lines of rescue and recovery efforts.

Let them know their union is there for them, just as they are there for their communities during and after these horrendous storms.
Think of people like Lorraine Brown, a 311 call center specialist and secretary-treasurer of AFSCME Local 199, who staffed Miami-Dade County’s 311 call center throughout the hurricane.
Here’s what Brown said as Irma inched closer: “We’ve been swamped with all kinds of calls and are just doing our best to get honest and accurate information out. It’ll be nonstop for days to come. We’re here to make sure people make the best choices with the best information at hand. I came in Saturday at 10 a.m. and am not leaving until Monday at the earliest. When possible, we just close our eyes and sleep a little at our desks. All of us would rather be on the phones helping people. We can sleep later.”
