Luzerne County PennDOT worker struck in active work zone

AFSCME Local 2143 member and Luzerne County PennDOT employee Tom Vitale was struck by an oversized load while operating a jackhammer in an active work zone on Monday, April 26.

Tom sustained serious injuries and his family has created a GoFundMe page where you can donate to help him in his long road to recovery.

According to the GoFundMe, “Tom has a broken pelvis and broken back and several other injuries. He will require multiple surgeries and medical care follow up.”

This incident occurred on the first day of National Work Zone Awareness Week and is an unwelcome reminder of the importance of slowing down and being extra careful in work zones.

AFSCME Council 13, District Council 87, and all of Tom’s union family are sending thoughts and prayers to him in hopes of a full recovery.

Please keep Tom and his family in your thoughts, donate to his recovery if you can, and be sure to always slow down and watch for workers in active work zones.
